CALL FOR PAPERS

Conference Background

What is the role of technology in the healthcare delivery process amidst organisational and managerial systems and solutions? The answer to this question seems to depend on who is being asked. Clinicians, administrators, health economists, technologists, patients, politicians and industry involved in the development and delivery of healthcare will all give different answers. Yet all of these people are expected to work together to deliver cohesive healthcare outcomes that benefit society.

About the HCTM Association

HCTM is about redesigning the health care delivery system
Major transformations are occurring in the delivery of healthcare worldwide. Medical and healthcare technologies are increasingly impacting many dimensions of healthcare delivery. Innovations introduced in the last decade have created accumulated effects that will be compounded with the continuing technical progress in medicine. Areas such as telemedicine, telehealth, computerized medical records, e-health and use of the Internet in B2B and B2C applications in healthcare are some of the milestones in the almost total revamping of the healthcare landscape. Innovations in medical and healthcare technologies are already transforming the operations, design and mission of hospitals. In this regard, the challenges for the future are an exciting opportunity for study, reflection, planning, and intervention.

HCTM is about exploring key issues and trends
The association provides a forum for identifying and exploring key issues in healthcare, technology and management and setting up research agendas for the future.

HCTM is an international network
We are a network of academics and managers from around the world interested in developing knowledge about healthcare, technology and management. It is a global network with international links where people can get together to communicate experience and ideas. It is a network that bridges the gap between research and practice.

HCTM is a multidisciplinary network
The association is concerned with a variety of different fields, such as: changes and transformations in society, applications of information technologies, emerging technologies in medical care and their applications of modern management.

HCTM has a focus on the development and application of knowledge
Excellence in providing healthcare must be led by the development of new knowledge.

Special feature

The HCTM conference happens to coincide with the Scandinavian conference on Health Informatics (SHI2005). To make the best use of this opportunity, the two organisation committees have decided to join forces, by organising:

  • A joint session with two keynote addresses in Aalborg Hospital, on Thursday 25 August.
  • A joint session with two keynote addresses on Friday 26 August, followed by a joint lunch at Aalborg University.

In addition, to even further promote exchange of knowledge and experience between the two communities, participants to the HCTM conference are free to attend sessions relevant for them in the SHI2005 conference, and vice versa.

Who should attend?

The Conference is of interest to medical and healthcare practitioners and researchers involved in all the phases of the development, management, delivery, evaluation, research or teaching of healthcare and the technology inherent in or associated with that. Including in this list, but not limited to them are: producers of medical instruments and healthcare equipment; pharmaceutical companies; providers of information and telecommunication technology for healthcare delivery; regulatory bodies; medical and healthcare professional groups and organizations; insurance and other financial companies; and teachers and researchers of healthcare innovation, management, technology, policy, ethics, and economics. All are invited to submit papers relevant to the conference theme and tracks described above.

Practitioners are also strongly encouraged to submit papers.

Submissions

  1. Abstracts of 400-600 words should be sent electronically to the conference secretariat (hctm@iprod.aau.dk) before March 1, 2005. Abstracts should indicate the track they are addressing; submissions may address more than one track.
Notifications of acceptance or rejection will be sent byMarch 25, 2005.
  2. Full papers of not more than 12 pages are due at the conference secretariat (hctm@iprod.aau.dk) not later than June 1, 2005.
  3. Submissions of students intending to attend the PhD Workshop should contain a statement that this is a paper submitted to the PhD Workshop, the title of the dissertation, and the full name of the supervisor(s).

Proceedings and Publication

All the papers presented at the Conference will appear in the proceedings, in the form of a CD ROM and a book of abstracts, and distributed to the conference participants. Selected papers, based upon a peer-review, will be considered for inclusion in a special issue of the International Journal of Healthcare Technology and Management (IJHTM). The publication of conference specials in other journals is being considered.

PhD WORKSHOP

In addition to the main conference there will be a PhD Workshop designed for doctoral students at all stages of their dissertation. The workshop provides PhD students with a forum for presenting and discussing their research with fellow PhD students and experienced researchers in the field.

Presentations will be themed to one of the following:

  • Clinical aspects of technology management in healthcare.
  • Administrative aspects of technology management in healthcare.
  • Economic aspects of technology management in healthcare.
  • Social aspects of technology management in healthcare.

Depending on the numbers involved, students will be given 20 or 30 minutes for presentation and questions/discussion. Questions and discussion will be provided by an expert group and attendant students. A pair of students will be selected to read each of the presenting papers so they can act as discussants following the presentation. These papers will be available to discussants two weeks before the workshop.

PhD students’ submissions should contain a statement that the submission is to the PhD track, the title of the student’s dissertation, and the full name of student’s School or PhD program and university and the dissertation advisor or supervisor.

The PhD Workshop will be held on the day after the conference, Saturday 27 August 2005.
