Teaching Track

A track devoted to the teaching of business ethics has been added to the 17th Annual EBEN Conference. The track seeks to build on the success of recent international conferences on the teaching of business ethics organised by EBEN (UK) and the Institute of Business Ethics. The track is sponsored by the Center for International Corporate Responsibility at Carnegie Mellon University, USA in support of the newly formed Journal of Business Ethics Education.

Papers may address teaching issues pertaining to ethics and entrepreneurship or examine broader themes associated with curriculum design, assessment, pedagogy and student learning in the business ethics field. In support of the conference theme, papers are particularly encouraged in demonstrating links between University-based and work-based learning.

In accordance with the original call for papers, participants are asked to submit an abstract in English (500 words) by March 5th 2004. Abstracts should be accompanied by brief biographical details (100 words) and a full mailing address (including E-mail). Notification of acceptance for presentation will be given by March 20th, 2004. Upon acceptance for presentation on the teaching track, full papers should be submitted by May 1st.

Selected papers resulting from the track will be considered for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Business Ethics Education (Senate Hall Publishers). The journal’s guidelines can be found at: www.senatehall.com/business_ethics/

All submissions for the teaching track must be written in Word or RTF format and should be submitted by email to: bruce.macfarlane@tvu.ac.uk

Management Day

The first day of the conference (24 June) will be especially targeted at managers who are responsible in their own organisation for the way Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsitility (CSR) are implemented. During this day several presentations will be given and discussions will be held from a tripartite point of view: experiences from trade and industry, from politics and from non governmental organisations.

Some important themes this day will be:

  • The impact of Corporate Governance Codes.
  • Disbribution of roles with regard to CSR between companies, customers, suppliers, non governmental organisations and government.
  • Experiences with CSR within national and international companies.
  • Vision on the relation between quality management and CSR.

Launch TPQW: Thematic Platform Quality of Life @ Work

Recently the European Commission formulated the strategic agenda of becoming the worldwide most important, knowledge-based economy. One major topic is to increase the quality of life and, more specifically, the "quality of life @ work". Regarding its many direct links to the ethical implications of the management of personnel, quality of life at work is a genuine ethical topic with a high impact on the recent debate in the field of Human Capital Management. It implies topics such as mobbing and stress at work, formal and informal participation, quality care, health and safety, labour conditions, work-life-balance, organisational culture, leadership, corporate governance in a larger understanding, and (of course) business ethics.
There are strong arguments for quality of life @ work. Next to some obvious economic advantages, e.g. by contributing to more enthusiast and productive employees, and some clear juridical reasons, there are distinct social and ethical reasons for dealing with quality of life @ work. This is especially true from a stakeholder point of view considering employees as one of the most important group of stakeholders.

To make organisations more sensitive for the topic and its both ethical and strategic implications, as well as to stimulate research, screening, and the implementation of special programs supporting quality of life @ work, the executive committee of EBEN has taken the initiative of launching a European sub-network about this issue: the "Thematic Platform Quality of Life @ Work" (TPQW). Like other thematic platforms provided for EBEN members, TPQW aims for a combination of academic research and the exchange of both best practices in business and experiences of high quality consultancy in the field. In the near future, TPQW will try to launch a European project with the aim to make entrepreneurs and managers more sensitive for this new important aspect of Human Capital Management.

At the EBEN annual conference 2004 in Twente this new thematic platform will be launched. Next to some introducing presentations and a debate about the topic "quality of live at work", participants are invited to discuss e.g. the following questions:

  • How could the concept quality of life @ work be defined precisely, which are related fields of research respectively business activities, etc.?
  • How will the TPQW organise itself ?
  • What will TPQW offer to EBEN-members ?
  • What kind of projects and initiatives could be launched by this new EBEN-Thematic Platform ?

Participation in the launching event will be free. However, for participating both in this event and in the Thematic Platform Quality of Work in general, we kindly ask you to subscribe by sending an e-mail to Annette Kleinfeld (annette.kleinfeld@bickmann.de) or Herman Siebens (vlaams.netwerk.voor.zakenethiek@skynet.be).
